This camellia begins blooming on Long Island any time between December & March and lasts through mid April. I was told it might be a sasanqua, but it looks something like Lady Clair, a japonica. It's been reliably hardy here in zone 7a. During deep freezes, the open blooms die back but others open soon to take their place. I'd appreciate any suggested IDs. |
It's amazing how perceptions can change after gaining a bit of knowledge. This plant came up as a "weed" in a 4" rooted cutting I had purchased from a mail-order supplier. I liked the look and so let it grow but was always somewhat sure it was a weed. It's now been identified as Talinum paniculatum ("Jewels of Opar"). Consequently, I've hosed off the mealy bug, fertilized it, stuck in a plant label and repotted it in a nicer pot. |

I purchased this at Home Depot labeled the typical name "6 inch tropical". I'd be embarrassed to admit what I had thought it was when purchasing it. Now that it has started to bloom, I realize it's not what I had expected. Within one day of posting it here, I've managed to discover that this is Chlorophytum orchidanteoides. I'm told that it seeds it self prolifically. I've searched the web and found it listed as Chlorophytum "mandarin" in some sites. |
